Servo Motors: Precision and Versatility in Motion Control
Guilherme Digitall | |
Servo motors are widely used in automation and robotics for their ability to deliver precise angular position, velocity, and acceleration control. These motors operate through feedback systems, making them essential in applications requiring high performance and accuracy.
Working Mechanism
Servo motors consist of three key components:
- Controlled Device – The motor itself.
- Output Sensor – Typically a potentiometer or encoder that provides position feedback.
- Feedback System – Compares the desired position with the current position and adjusts accordingly.
The closed-loop system uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signals to control the motor’s position. The duration of the pulse determines the motor’s angular position, enabling fine-tuned motion.
Types of Servo Motors
- AC Servo Motors – High efficiency, suitable for heavy-duty applications.
- DC Servo Motors – Simple design, used in low-power applications.
- Positional Rotation Servo Motors – Ideal for angular movements.
- Continuous Rotation Servo Motors – Rotate freely without stopping at fixed angles.
- Linear Servo Motors – Convert rotational motion into linear motion.
- Brushless Servo Motors – High performance, durable, and energy-efficient.
Applications
- Robotics – Robotic arms and grippers.
- CNC Machinery – Precision control in cutting and machining.
- Camera Stabilizers – Smooth motion in gimbals.
- Medical Equipment – Surgical robots and imaging systems.
- Conveyor Systems – Automated material handling.
- Home Automation – Smart home devices and appliances.
